The social security system knows three statutory insurance classes:
- health insurance,
- accident insurance and
- pension insurance
In a broader sense, the austrian social security system also includes unemployment insurance, which is not administered by social security institutions, but rather by the Public Employment Service (Arbeitsmarktservice - AMS).
The main legal source of social security law are federal laws. Social security in general is governed by the General Social Insurance Act (ASVG), while special insurances are regulated by their respective special laws (B-KUVG, BSVG, GSVG, FSVG).
